Retained-character and rear-room renovations in Camberwell.

Mel One renovates Camberwell interiors and adjoining exterior areas with clear limits between the features staying and the rooms changing. Rear kitchen and living-space updates can be finished carefully against retained halls, front rooms and visible details.

Keep the valuable features in the work plan.

Existing cornices, door surrounds, skirting and front-room finishes can determine where a rear renovation starts and stops. We identify what is sound enough to retain and which damaged surfaces are part of the update. Retention does not mean painting over deterioration. Visible external changes and any property-specific heritage requirements need assessment; an internal renovation is not permission to alter the frontage.

Prepare a rear work area without using the hall as a workshop.

Before removal, the retained approach to the kitchen needs protection, with sensitive edges and features separated from the working area. Items being kept are identified so demolition stops at the agreed boundary. Material storage and cutting or preparation areas are arranged away from finished front rooms where practical. A safe household route remains part of the sequence if the home stays occupied.

Renew the kitchen and make good the adjoining rooms.

For the agreed kitchen update, we remove the selected old cabinets and finishes, repair exposed wall and ceiling surfaces, and install the specified cabinetry, worktops, flooring or trims. A changed wall opening requires structural and service assessment before removal. We define the adjoining finishes to reinstate, while plumbing, electrical and other regulated work remain with the appropriately qualified practitioners responsible for those elements.

Resolve the meeting of retained and renewed finishes.

A retained hall and a renewed rear room do not always need identical materials. Where a match is intended, profiles, sheen and the extent of repainting are considered together. Where a deliberate transition works better, it is located clearly at a doorway or other agreed boundary. Final checks include doors and cabinet movement, repaired edges, finish continuity and whether the protected original details remain in the agreed condition.

Compare a trim sample before replacing the old run.

A new skirting board can have the right height but a different profile or projection beside a retained Camberwell hall. We compare the existing doorway detail with a proposed sample before ordering lengths. A sound original run may stay; a damaged section may need repair or replacement, with the joint agreed first. For paint and plaster, we also decide whether the repair stops locally, covers a complete wall or reaches the next room boundary. An old colour code does not guarantee matching texture or sheen.

Photograph the detail and the room boundary together.

Send a view from the retained room towards the rear work, a close-up of the moulding with a ruler beside it, and daylight photos of the damage. Mark the doors, lengths and wall surfaces to keep so protection, repair and wider reinstatement can be priced separately. If available, include the relevant property report, heritage citation or approved drawing: Boroondara's guidance checks the actual address and proposed change, including which parts of the property are affected.

Before you get started

Can the front rooms remain while the rear kitchen is renovated?

Yes, that can be the agreed scope. Protection, access and the meeting point of old and new finishes need definition. Work to a retained feature is included only where specified, so the rear renovation does not quietly become a whole-house replacement.

Will a local paint patch disappear against an old wall?

An exact invisible match cannot be assumed. Existing ageing, texture and sheen affect the result. The scope can extend preparation and decoration to a sensible room boundary where that gives a more coherent finish than a small isolated patch.

Can a period-looking exterior be changed with the internal work?

We can consider exterior changes alongside the interior renovation as a separately assessed part of the project. The proposed alteration must suit the property’s planning and heritage controls, the condition of the existing features and any required approvals before work proceeds.

What if the replacement trim sample does not match the original profile?

We can compare repairing the original, sourcing a closer profile, or ending the new run at a deliberate doorway boundary. The sample, joint position and decoration extent should be agreed before removal; an exact reproduction is not assumed.
